to hear her …

When I originally started this post earlier this morning, we had no update on Justin’s cystic fibrosis test. At this point, however, I’m so excited to say that Justin is not a carrier, so we’re good to go! Yippee!

This afternoon, I get to hear girlfriend’s heartbeat again! I love the sound. Well, maybe it’s not the sound, but the concept. That sound represents life that’s being developed inside me. It’s such a miracle.

I guess that’s it! I have good news to take to my midwife this afternoon, and I couldn’t be more happy!

Have a great day!

no update …

This is the most ridiculous mess. Justin called his doctor’s office, and now his doctor is out for the day. The lab report is on her desk to be read tomorrow morning. According to the person on the phone, the doctor will call tomorrow morning after reading the report. We’ll see.

Unbelievable. As Justin says, “How hard is it?”

So … no update!

P.S. – If you want the name of a doctor’s office to avoid in Sykesville/Eldersburg, I’ve got one for ya! This woman and her staff are complete idiots! Should I anger myself and recap? Why not!

  • I found out I am a carrier for CF. Midwife instructed me to have husband call his doctor so she could order the test – best for insurance purposes.
  • Husband goes to his appointment and requests CF blood test. Doctor argues; tells him she thinks I should just have an amnio because at this point, the baby either has or does not have CF. Think about it … invasive procedure that could cause miscarriage or simple blood test? No comment.
  • Husband has blood test done on Friday, November 28th.
  • Husband calls for results the week of December 15th. Discovers they’ve not only lost his paper file, but have no record of him under his date of birth. Results are not yet available and are being mailed.
  • Husband calls for results the week of January 12th. Results are not available (Remember, they’ve lost his paper file, so they have no where to put anything that is received.), but they will call Labcorp to have them fax and will call back w/in 10-15 minutes.
  • An hour and a half passes with no answer. Husband calls and gets voicemail stating that office hours on Monday are from 11-7 with lunch from 2-3. It’s just after 4. A personal visit to the office reveals that they’re closed for the day.
  • Husband calls the following day just before noon. Doctor is out for the day; results are on her desk and will be read the following morning. Office staff states doctor call after reading the report. (I won’t hold my breath.)
  • Note: As of today, it’s been 6 1/2 weeks!! I’ve been to one prenatal appointment since this whole process began, and have another one tomorrow afternoon. It sure would be nice to have results for this one so we can move forward!
  • Note: I can’t get involved because they don’t have a copy of his HIPAA paperwork on which I’m listed as an authorized party. (That’s probably a good thing for them because I’m pissed.)

update on the update …

So yesterday’s 10-15 minutes may just turn into 10-15 DAYS. We still have yet to hear from Justin’s doctor’s office as to the results of his cystic fibrosis test. They told him at around 2:30 that they’d have the results faxed to them from Labcorp and they’d return his call within 10-15 minutes. No answer by 4:00, so he called back shortly thereafter. IMG_6592 What he heard was a recording stating that their office hours were from 11 am to 7 pm on Monday, and they took lunch from 2 pm to 3 pm. Only problem is that it was after 4:00 and the recording was still on. Well guess what? They were closed for the day!

Now it’s just after 10 am the next day and we’re still waiting to hear. Gotta love it. I’ll let you know once I hear, but don’t hold your breath. What a crock.

On a similar and yet somewhat unrelated note, here’s a picture Justin took of my belly last Thursday night. Oddly, it seems to have grown even more in the past 4 days and is even bigger now. Once I become brave enough again to step in front of a camera, I’ll share. Until then, you’ll just have to wait! For now, you get my 22 week belly.

simple things in life …

If after reading this you want to say, “Seriously, Min, it’s a trash can!,” I’ll completely understand. I’ll take no offense and will not be insulted. Let me remind you that it’s the simple things in life that make me happy.

We bought our house in July of 2004. That makes it approximately 4 1/2 years ago. During that time, we’ve had a big trash can outside, but have never had a trash can in our kitchen. I know, I know – strange. Why? I don’t really know. We have just been “recycling” grocery bags for the last 4 1/2 years, as if we’re phobic about a trash can or something.

IMG_6595 Last night, however, marked a huge step forward for us – we bought a kitchen trash can! I had been eyeballing them while shopping for a bridal shower gift this past weekend, but refused to make the purchase without a 20% off Bed, Bath & Beyond coupon. Well, guess what I got in the mail yesterday? You guessed it – a 20% off coupon from Bed, Bath & Beyond! I couldn’t even wait a day – we had to go that night. I could hardly contain my excitement as we entered the store – yes, it was ridiculous! We discussed pros and cons of 3 models with a BB&B associate, and eventually decided on the rectangular model. The oblong model was ruled out because it could only be placed in one direction, and the semi-circle model presented the same problem. The rectangular model can face either way in its given space, making it the most flexible of the three.

IMG_6219 You have no idea how excited I was to take it out of the box and set it up in the kitchen last night! Yes, it’s only a trash can. But it will increase my productivity in the kitchen, streamline the cooking process, and best of all, our siberian husky Cody can’t get into it, so there will be no more trash strewn throughout the house when I arrive home!

Yesterday, we said goodbye to regular use of what I called the, “ghetto can” and welcomed a shiny new stainless steel beauty into our home.

Woohoo!

awaiting an update …

So I’ve mentioned in previous posts that I’m a carrier for cystic fibrosis. Here’s a recap as to what CF is and the implications …

  • As Caucasians, both Justin and I each have a 1 in 29 chance of being a carrier.
  • The odds of both of us being carriers are approximately 1 in 800.
  • The only way to have a child with CF is if both parents carry the CF gene. If both parents carry the CF gene, there is a 25% chance that the child will have cystic fibrosis, a 50% chance they’ll be a carrier, and a 25% chance they neither have CF nor carry the gene.
  • Approximately 30,000 children and adults in the United States have CF.
  • CF is an inherited disease for which there is no cure.
  • According to the March of Dimes website, most affected individuals survive into their 30s, though some die in childhood and others live to age 40 or beyond.

We’ll know in 10-15 minutes if Justin is a carrier. I’ll be a mess until he calls/e-mails me with the answer …

catching up …

Sheesh, I have a lot to catch up on! First, I hope you had an amazing holiday! Ours was truly unforgettable, and we were so fortunate to be able to spend time with our friends and family during our time off.

Now, where do I begin? I’ve lost track of what week I’m in, so let me see. Last Friday was 22 weeks; this Friday will be 23 weeks. Yikes, I’m officially more than halfway there! Speaking of official, I now officially look pregnant, as well. I seemed to have grown like crazy over a period of 3 days. It was 12/26-28 … we were in Pittsburgh, and every morning, Michelle would say I looked like I grew overnight! She was right – and there’s no mistaking this bubble belly any more! That little person in there is moving around like crazy now, and Justin’s even had a chance to feel kicks and acrobatic routines from the womb. So cool! Now if only I had my pre-pregnancy bladder back …

The cutest thing is my nephews “tickling” the baby in my belly. Recently, my nephew Kannon has grown a baby in his belly, too! Amazingly, his baby falls out at night, but he simply puts the baby back in when this happens. Thank goodness! That baby in his belly even laughs when you tickle her! His imagination is unbelievable!

02_boys Okay, now I’m back-tracking … trying to keep things in order. Christmas Eve, we spent the evening at Justin’s parent’s house. It’s an annual tradition, and is always done in true Polish style. Every year, we have broccoli & cheese soup, shrimp, scallops, salmon, pierogies, and lots more things that I’m forgetting. 03_sandy Then we head downstairs and open gifts, which has become a blast now that the boys are old enough to “get” opening gifts from Santa. We had so much fun! Kannon opened a few, and once he got his Hess truck, he told Michelle that he wanted to take the rest of his presents home and open them later! He’s 3 1/2! Then again, he has always been a detail-oriented little guy, so I guess it makes some sense! Magnum, on the other hand, was flying through his stuff! It was cute to see him stop and play with some of the ones he really liked. They were such fun!

So, are you curious about whether we’re having a boy or girl!? Here’s how it all happened …

12_a We were joined by my parents, my sisters A & Alli, Alli’s boyfriend Billy, aunt Joan, and uncle Gary for Christmas dinner. We had a great time; ate lots of food, traded great gifts, and enjoyed each other’s company. 13_alli Later that night, Justin’s parents Sandy & Jon came over for the big reveal. My mom and Sandy were about ready to lose their minds in anticipation, and I found it hilarious to prolong the suspense in as many ways as I could imagine! We opened gifts – slowly! Unfortunately, they wouldn’t let me serve dessert before the big reveal! When we finished opening gifts, everyone but me decided it was time, so I gave in. My mom, Sandy & Jon were on their cell phones, ready to let others in on the fun via phone. 17_calls After a few photos with the envelope, it was time. There was such anticipation! I so wanted to know, but at the same time, the suspense was so fun! We opened to a sea of pink … it’s a girl!!! I had spent weeks saying I knew it was a girl but wanted a boy. Now that we know she’s a she, I don’t know how I’d feel if we were having a boy. Justin, on the other hand, knew it was a girl, too, but wanted a girl. Looks like he got his wish! 21_girl After all of the excitement died down, we did some scratch-offs, and most of us won a big, fat nothing. Ask my mom, however, about her big $25,000 winnings! She loves this story!!!

So that’s that. The next morning, we headed to Pittsburgh to visit with Justin’s grandmothers, aunts and uncles. We did the annual family dinner, got some shopping in (Including plenty of shopping for our new “girlfriend!”), and even got a tour of the Pittsburgh suburbs thanks to some wrong turns.

The rest of our time off was spent working around the house. Girlfriend’s room is currently being used as a storage room, so we were able to clean a good bit of that out. We even pulled up the carpet and linoleum in there, so we’re just about ready to start the floor!

I’m learning that creating a baby registry is WAY more difficult than preparing a wedding registry. There are so many new “things” that my head is spinning … and so much that I don’t know!

rug We finally decided on a theme for girlfriend’s room – it’ll be a bright retro theme based around an area rug we found. We’ll use brown, green and maybe orange or pink as the main colors and will accent with some of the other colors in the rug. Wall colors are still up in the air. As our living room is lime green, we can’t do girlfriend’s room in green. I don’t want to do brown, and also wasn’t crazy about pink. We’ll probably end up choosing one of the teal or orange shades in the rug for the wall color.

Hmmm, what else? I had so much to write about, and it’s all escaping me now! I guess this really should be enough for now – I’ve given you more than enough to read and if you’ve made it through, way to go! For now, I wish you a wonderful year in 2009. I know it will be a magical time for us, and I wish you joy and prosperity as well! I’ll be back with updates just as soon as I can remember what they are! (Yes, I believe the mommy brain has kicked in already – I’m in big trouble!)
