worth a chuckle …

0727091246 I was walking through Kohl’s with a friend during lunch and walked by this t-shirt. I don’t know why, but it was hysterical to me at the moment. We all need a good, pointless chuckle every now and then … hopefully I’ve given you one, too!

was that a laugh?

IMG_9136e1 Yes! Lily was hanging out in her swing this afternoon, and I was talking to her – asking her where she was going as I pushed her (I think I’ve figured out that she doesn’t like the clicking noise made by the swing, so I push her myself.). She was all smiles; it was so fun! Well, after about a minute of this chatter, she giggled! It’s the first time I’ve heard it from her, and I was psyched! She did it 3 or 4 times, and that was that. I couldn’t get her to do it while Justin was inside, so that’s a bummer. At any rate, it was SO cute! Hopefully I’ll be able to get it on video soon; when I do, I’ll share it with you!

Baby I’m Amazed by You …

IMG_9091e1 We made the trip out to Pittsburgh and back yesterday for Justin’s cousin Jen’s wedding. Many congratulations and best wishes to Jen & Zeb as they begin their life together! The wedding was beautiful, and it was great to see family we don’t often get to see.

While a trip to Pittsburgh and back in one day is enough for two adults (It’s 3h30m each way without traffic and stops, so it usually ends up being between 4h and 4h30m.), it’s got to be even harder on a 2 1/2 month old. I didn’t know what to expect from Peanut on the trip. If I had to guess, I would have probably predicted fussiness in the car both ways and a happy, awake and alert girl at the wedding. I had NO idea she’d be SO incredibly good! She slept most of the way up. IMG_9097e1 We made one stop about midway, and she ate then. When we got to the church, she was a bit fussy, but nothing out of the ordinary. We had time to feed her, and she quickly settled. She was awesome through the ceremony (Not a peep!) and amazing during the reception. On the trip home, again she slept most of the way. When we got home around midnight, she ate and was fighting going to sleep. After half an hour or so, I got her to sleep and she slept until 5 am! I was worried that after all that sleeping she’d be awake through the night. Not so! It would have been tough on both Justin & I if she was going to give us a rough night; we were both up at 4:15 am that morning (No particular reason, just didn’t see the need to go back to sleep when we were leaving at 9:30 am.). Considering how good she was, though, we would have taken what she gave us.

IMG_9108e1 I really couldn’t believe it; she was incredible!

It wouldn’t be right to recount the trip without giving great credit to Cody, too. He lasted 14 and a half hours! Awesome!

All in all, it was a great trip. The wedding was great, the bride was gorgeous, and everything seemed just perfect! Again, congrats to the new couple; I wish you a life time of love and happiness!

drink to your health …

- This is an article I wrote last summer for our company newsletter. -

By now, we’re well into the new year.  For those of you who made health and fitness part of your New Year’s resolution, I hope you’re well on your way to a healthier, new you!  If not, you’ve still got plenty of time, but you know how it goes … the sooner, the better.  I’m actually hoping as I’m sitting here in early January writing this article that I’ve met some of my goals by the time this newsletter is published.  If not, instead of a pat on the back, I’ll be telling myself to get it together!  As most of us know from experience, it’s no easy task to adopt healthier eating habits, lose weight, and meet fitness goals in order to live a better life.

If you’ve ever embarked on a mission of weight loss and/or healthy living, without question, you’ve heard someone preach of the importance of drinking plenty of water.  Personally, I’ve heard it time and time again, and for at least half a dozen reasons, such as,  “It increases your metabolism.”  “It helps you burn fat.”  “It fills you up and helps curb hunger.”  “It flushes toxins out of your system.”  You know the stories, and the list goes on and on.

In an attempt to put an end to all of these rumors, myths and falsities, I decided to investigate the real reason why we should balloon ourselves with good ol’ H2O.

So what’s the truth?  Drinking more water actually helps you lose fat!  Any idea how this happens?  Me neither, until now.  Believe it or not, it all comes down to the work done by the liver and kidneys.  Let’s first look at each individually, then the joint responsibility of both.

Liver: In order to lose fat, you want your liver to be in the best shape possible in order to convert stored fat into energy.  As this is one of the liver’s main jobs, it has the potential to spend a good amount of energy on this task.  Another of the liver’s tasks is to pick up where the kidneys leave off.  Hold that thought, and let’s move to the kidneys for more.

Kidneys: These tiny organs are serious business!  At 0.5% of your body weight, they receive a whopping 20% of your total blood supply!  What do they do with all of this energy?  According to http://www.howstuffworks.com/kidney.htm, some of the functions of your kidneys include: (1) regulate the composition of your blood, (2) remove wastes from your body, (3) maintain calcium levels, and (4) keep volume of water in your body constant.  For the purpose of this article, let’s focus on (4) keep volume of water in your body constant.  Your kidneys require lots of water to function properly; in fact, it’s a lot more than we may realize.  So …

Together: Inadequately watered kidneys force the liver into overdrive, causing it to pull double duty, and subsequently lower its overall production.  You can imagine – doing the jobs of two people instead of one would cause you to perhaps accomplish the end result of both jobs (If you’re lucky!), but with much less efficiency than doing only one job.  When you work your kidneys too hard and don’t allow them to convert fat into energy, you store fat!  Tell me, just who wants to do that?!

That being said, how much water will allow your liver to function properly and relieve your kidneys of double duty?  That number differs depending on several factors (age, gender, weight, build, activity level, environment) and varies by source.  A good starting point would be 13 cups (104 oz.) for men and 9 cups (72 oz.) for women with an increased 10-13 cups (80-104 oz.) recommended for pregnant women.  If you’re active, you can expect to add an additional 2-3 cups (16-24 oz) to the above numbers.  The recommended absolute minimum for any adult is 8 cups (64 oz).

With a focus on your water intake this spring and summer, you’ll be well on your way to drinking to your health … in water, that is!

what is web 2.0?

- This is an article I wrote last summer for our company newsletter. -

In the vast arena of the world wide web, there are ever-emerging tools and technologies.  Many of these new tools fall under the category of web 2.0.  But what exactly is web 2.0?  From the name, it may seem like an updated version of the existing internet, perhaps requiring yet another download of upgraded software or a new operating system.  In fact, web 2.0 is quite different.  While it does take place over the internet, it’s nothing that can’t be accessed via your current browser software.  In fact, you may already be using web 2.0 software technology and not even know it!  Let’s look further at what web 2.0 means, and then I’ll describe further some of the useful web 2.0 sites out there.

What do sharing, creativity, and collaboration have in common?  All are foundations of web 2.0.  Instead of a platform for retrieving information, the internet becomes the platform for interactive tool resulting from the input of its users.  Still confused?  Simply put, web 2.0 allows users to run applications using only the internet – no installation of programs, lengthy downloads, and costly upgrades.  Rather, web 2.0 promotes interactivity, supporting participation and the addition of value by its users.

Now, aren’t you curious to find out if you’re web 2.0 savvy?  Have you ever looked for a definition or description on Wikipedia?  Ever placed a bid on eBay or posted something for sale on craigslist?  How about downloading songs from iTunes, posting photos on Flickr, or looking up directions on MapQuest?  Have you watched a YouTube video or created a database of your favorite links on del.icio.us?  If you’re into networking and staying in touch with friends, you might be using MySpace, Facebook, or LinkedIn.  Like keeping up with the latest news through tools on Technorati, Digg or NewsGator?  If any of these are familiar to you, then you’ve already used web 2.0 technology!

Wikipedia: This interactive encyclopedia allows users to update entries, making information the collective effort of all of those who choose to participate.  Know something about the Civil War that isn’t posted on Wikipedia?  Feel free to submit it!  See something wrong with a posting about the lifespan of the earless monitor lizard?  Fix it!  Wikipedia is officially, “the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit.”  There you have it – it’s yours!

eBay, craigslist: If you’re looking to buy or sell something unique, these two sites are for you.  craigslist is organized into local “classifieds” which you can browse, while eBay serves as an online search auction site.

Flickr: Save the time and effort of e-mailing photos back and forth by using Flickr.  Set up an online account, and you can upload your photos to this site and direct friends and family to the site to view any photos you select.  You can also flag your photos as public, sharing them with the world.  Undiscovered photographers, this one’s for you!  Other similar sites include Fotolog and SmugMug.

YouTube: This is a rapidly growing site dedicated to video sharing.  If you pay attention to politics, you may have heard about or watched one of the presidential debates in which voters asked questions of the candidates via YouTube.  Voters created videos, posted them to YouTube’s site, and videos were then selected for presentation to the candidates in the televised debate.  Perhaps you’ve watched sports or news clips on this site.  In addition to watching videos, you can also share your own captured moments with friends, family, and/or the world through YouTube.

del.icio.us: Known as a site for social bookmarking, del.icio.us not only allows you to share your favorite sites with whomever you choose (Or not!), but it’s a great way to keep your favorite links all in one handy place!  You no longer need to remember web addresses, keep a paper list, or waste time thinking about a site you visited two months ago.  With del.icio.us, you can even organize your links by keyword, referred to as “tags.”

MySpace, Facebook & LinkedIn: Is your social network stronger than your real network of colleagues, friends and family?  If so, you’re certainly subscribed to at least one of these social networking sites!  It’s networking without the face-to-face element.  FYI: LinkedIn takes a particularly professional spin as compared with MySpace and Facebook.

Technorati, Digg, NewsGator: Do you follow the latest news?  Subscribe to blogs?  If either of these topics are of interest to you, check out one of these sites.  Serving as either news or blog feeds, these sites give you a single source for all of the news to which you choose to subscribe.  A true one stop shop!

Hungry for more?  Check out http://www.go2web20.net/.  This site has an insane number of links to the latest web 2.0 tools.  As of early January, there were over 1,800 tools listed on the site, and that number is sure to have grown by now!

Now that you’re armed with all of the latest internet tools, get to your computer and start clicking … just don’t forget to save your links to  del.icio.us and share your new knowledge on Wikipedia!

isn’t it ironic?

I was on my way home this afternoon when I witnessed and took in what I consider an episode of sheer irony. I was following a white van with a bumper sticker that read “CAR ACCIDENT LAWYERS.” These must be some pretty awful lawyers because any driver like this guy would never advertise for a descent lawyer – he would be sure to lose!

0724091623 So I’m following this guy, and I’m about to make a left turn when he decides he, too, wants to make the same left turn – and he is now significantly past the turn. There’s a car coming my way, and I’ve already started my turn. This guy does a super fast u-turn right in the middle of the road and just about takes out my passenger side turning onto the same road. Meanwhile, I’m about to be hit by the car he turned after – I was stuck … I couldn’t turn b/c he was now going the same way, but there was a car coming right at me. Thank goodness nothing happened.

I was on a mission to get a picture of this guy’s bumper sticker … I love it! Dude, if they’re any good, take it off … you don’t want to give anyone any ideas, and you’re sure to need a lawyer in the future!

my peanut …

IMG_8956e1 I always miss my Peanut, but by the time Friday afternoon comes, I’m so ready to go. This afternoon was no different, and I was so excited to see my little miss! Of course, the days I’m most anxious to see her are the days when traffic is horrible. When we finally got home, however, she was in a fantastic mood, so we even got to play before starting dinner! I adore evenings like this.

She’s cracking me up in her bouncy seat. Normally, when we put her in, she gets so excited about seeing the toys. She smiles and makes these flirty eyes that melt my heart! IMG_8983e1 She moves like crazy, making the toys move, and getting her even more excited! This evening, I gave her some time with her animals, and then we moved on to her play mat. She wasn’t so interested in the mat this evening; I rolled her over a few times and that was that. Fair enough; there are times I want to do things and times I don’t, too.

It’s awesome to watch her personality start to develop. Her expressions are getting to be so incredibly funny, and we’re really enjoying the increased awake hours. IMG_9003e1 It makes our time with her so much more rich!

She took a pretty good nap while Justin and I made dinner, and she was so out that I even got a picture of her!

I can honestly say that I’ve never known love like this. Our Peanut brightens every moment of my day. I love watching her grow and learn new things. I love to snuggle her in the middle of the night. I simply adore her!!!

wish list …

My wish list really isn’t that long – I’m a relatively simple gal and couldn’t really care much about material things. There is, however, one thing I do want. And that one thing I want, I can’t have.

I’m a Verizon Wireless customer, and have been mostly happy since I made the switch from AT&T Wireless approximately 7 years ago. AT&T was terrible, at least at the time, and quite honestly, the service I received has completely ruined the brand for me.

See where this is going? I want an iPhone. I adore my Macs – I have one at home and even have a lone Mac in an all PC world at work (“Please? It’s the BEST for graphics!” Well, it’s true, but …). I want an iPhone with Verizon; I simply refuse to go back to AT&T. (Am I headed for a temper tantrum here, or what!?)

What’s a girl to do? According to articles circulating the web today (Check these out: this one, and another, and another …), I could be the thrilled owner of an iPhone on the Verizon Wireless network sometime in the future. But the question is W-H-E-N? No one knows. And unfortunately, I know it won’t be before we’re eligible for “New Every Two” phones – in early August. Sigh.

I guess for now I’ll just have to suck it up and choose something else – it’s just that something that I’m unsure of. Do you have a phone/smartphone that you adore? Or maybe one that you can’t stand? I’d love to hear what you like/don’t like about the device you’re currently using.

Until the day comes that I can purchase an iPhone and use it with my Verizon Wireless account, I’ll just have to keep waiting … and longing …

how to: shower with no power

Oh, and it rhymes! How fabulous!

I don’t know – can you use water if you’re on a public system when the power goes out? Fill me in; I’d love to know.

Anyway, we have a well, so when the power dies, so does our water use. Such was the case this morning; thankfully, I had showered already. Otherwise, I’d be going somewhere to get clean! I was drying my hair when the power went out, so while I’m clean, I look like Medusa today.

My husband was not as fortunate in the shower category, and provided me with this explanation as to how to shower when we lose power:

Do you know how to take a shower with no power? Rinse hair first with plastic cup. Use penny size shampoo, rub in. Rinse hair with two cups water, also acts as a prerinse for rest of body. Lather up. Rinse with three cups. Now you are done and can use the actual shower to rinse, using remainder of water pressure. Finally you flush toilet, since toilet tank is already full for one flush. It will not affect shower since the tank will only fill if there is enough water pressure left. Now that’s green.

I don’t know why, but that’s hysterical to me. Thank goodness I’m married to a handy, LEED AP certified (Think green!) mechanical engineer … otherwise, I don’t know how we’d ever survive. Ha!

link of the week …

Just as Facebook has recently become the new MySpace, I have a feeling Pingg will become the new Evite.

Pingg combines a fresh and modern look with great functionality and a high level of customization. While the overall concept of Pingg is like Evite, there are many more available options. Users have the choice of using one of Pingg’s exclusive images for their invitation or uploading one of their own. There are also many formats in which you can send invites – via traditional e-mail, but also by text message, or even printed for direct mail. Invitations can even be posted on social networking sites such as Facebook & Twitter. And on the event website, users can add specific messages, a map to the event location, post pictures, and more. Additionally, the dashboard gives you access to all things related to each of your events. You can even add gift registries, request that guests make a contribution to a charity, or contribute funds to the event!

If you’re planning an upcoming event and haven’t checked out Pingg to communicate with your attendees, you’re missing out! The site allows for flexible invitations that are trendy and functional! Check out who’s been talking about Pingg, and get started on your own invitation today!
