1,000 gifts … 101-150

Now that I’m feeling better, I’m back in the game! Gifts 101-150 are done and can be found here! Some of my favorites:

102. A fun day with my sisters and mom. It doesn’t get much better than that!
111. A kind act by a stranger.
121. The realization that life can change in an instant.
122. The beauty held on one simple word.
143. The first snowball of the season … in April!

“can you share with me?”

Lil: “Hi Lauren.”
Lauren: “Hi Lily.”
Lil: (pointing to Lauren’s mint green Peeps) “What’s that?”
Lauren: “They’re Peeps.” (looks at me) “Can she have one?”
Me: “She sure can; thank you for asking! She needs to eat her lunch first, though. Sound good?”
Lauren: “Yep! She can have a row, and I can have a row.”
Me: “You are too sweet! Lily, can you eat your lunch, please?”
Lil: “Okay!”
(eats for a minute or so, the comes back)
Lil: (looking up at Lauren) “Can you share with me?”

My heart melted a thousand times over. Our little girl, just a month shy of 3 years old, is growing up.

Over the past month or so, she’s started initiating conversations of her own. Up until now, she’s provided her own thoughts (“See the moon, MaMum?” and other types of things.), and she’s also been holding a good conversation, but on a topic of our our choosing. Now she’s looking for conversation on her terms, and holding a much more structured conversation. Much more than a simple thought, these are more in-depth conversations. She’s processing and responding.

Yet in some ways, she’s still so little. Like when she says, “I can’t want/like ___” instead of “I don’t want/like ___.”

If I could box up the innocence and keep it forever, I would. She’s just so precious right now. All moments I don’t ever want to forget.

scar.

The Dermabond is gone, and now I’m even more certain a scar will remain. And do you want to know something?

I don’t really care.

I’ll use the Mederma, because that’s what I should do. But that scar just below my left eyebrow will serve as a constant reminder – or many constant reminders, for that matter:

  • … that none of this is within our control; that He kept our little blonde-haired, blue-eyed girl safe on that Sunday afternoon.
  • … that she won’t be little forever.
  • … that asking for help is sometimes the best thing to do.
  • … that always thinking through what could happen is incredibly important. We should have been much more careful; things could have been much, much worse.
  • … that some things in my life are just as I want them.

our time.

It might sound strange, but I think some of our best times are had on MaMum and Dada’s bed. It’s one of the rooms in which we spend a lot of time. This is not necessarily by choice, but our laundry area is in the closet in our room, and it’s the most convenient room downstairs to get Lil ready for bed, as well.

Last night held one of those amazing times. She likes to jump on our bed, hide behind the pillows, get under the covers, have “tea & cookies,” and just be silly. She took her cards with her – two packs – and we went through a few shapes and colors. We pretended like we were sleeping. There was tickling. Eh, there’s always tickling! And when I pretended to fall asleep, she’d wake me up by touching her nose to mine. The laugh that came from that 27-ish lb. little girl was too much for my heart. “MaMum, wake up! Wake up, MaMum!” I wish I could capture her spirit.

What’s better is that I pretended to fall asleep after I woke her up this morning. How did she wake me up? By touching her nose to mine. And did my heart ever melt.

I don’t want to forget these times; the memories are far to precious to leave behind.

mom moment: breakfast.

Got Lil up and dressed this morning. We went into the kitchen to take her medicine (She had an ear infection, so we’re finishing up antibiotics.) and choose breakfast. I asked the usual …

Me: “Do you want Honey Nut Cheerios?”
Lil: “Nope.”
Me: “Do you want some Reese’s Puffs?”
Lil: “Nope.”
Me: “How about some eggs?”
Lil: “No eggs.”

She then opened the refrigerator and looked around (Opening the refrigerator is her new ‘thing.’).

Lil: “I can’t find something.”
Me: “Well how about some Honey Nut Cheerios?”
Lil: “No Honey Nut Cheerios. How about some corns?” (corns = corn)
Me: “How about Honey Nut Cheerios? You had corns for dinner and you have corns packed in your lunch today.”
Lil: “Hmmm, okay!”

Oh. My. Gosh. The girl kills me sometimes.

mom moment: macaroni & cheese.

Just one of those mom moments that I’ve got to remember … there’s nothing quite as thrilling as being a parent!

It was about 7:30 pm on Saturday night. We had finished dinner from Boston Market – turkey, mashed potatoes, and macaroni & cheese. In true toddler style, Lil ended up with a nice macaroni & cheese mustache, which Dada wiped away as he got her into her pajamas and ready for bed.

Fast forward an hour or so. I begin to get up from the couch, and the following conversation unfolds:

L: “MaMum, where you going?”

Me: “I’m going to wash my face, honey.”

L: Touching my face, just outside my mouth, “Oh, you have macaroni and cheese there?”

The innocent mind of a child. Sometimes I wish I could bottle her up and keep her this way forever.

1,000 gifts … 1-50

Update: So I’ve decided to use a separate site to house my 1,000 gifts posts. I’ll leave 1-50 here, and in the future, I’ll just post a link (and maybe a sneak peek) when each set of 50 is up. My 1,000 gifts …

This year, I’ll count 1,000 (and hopefully many more) gifts, or blessings, in my life. Some may be silly, some more serious, and probably most right in-between. I’ll fill you in on it a little more later, but for now, here are the first 50.

1. The health of my family.
2. The playdate that shouldn’t have been. We were supposed to be visiting a wedding venue with my sister, her fiancee, and the rest of my family yesterday. When the stomach bug hit Lil through the night on Saturday, we were forced to stay home. We ended up having a fabulous day in – playing choo-choo, watching Shrek, making macaroni & cheese, and just being.
3. The fun in “just for practice for the party that’s 4 months away” cake making. I have a few improvements I’ll make on our next “practice” cake, but it was a start that left me feeling fairly confident.
Trial 1.
4. Good relationships with my sisters.
5. Pandora radio.
6. A 60+ degree Saturday in January. We had an amazing time at the park, which leads me to number 7.
7. A growing little girl. She can now ride her bike!

16. The reflection that accompanies packing up the Nativity this year.
17. Little kisses.
18. The promise of our first “Bucket List” trip.
19. The 2011 Family Gift, which is much more of a blessing than anything money can buy.
20. The light in Lily’s eyes as I show her the Steelers hoodie she’ll wear the day after their loss to the Broncos. We’re no fair weather fans, thank you very much.
21. Great crock pot recipes.
22. Memories in print.
23. Starting an inspirational book.
