I really enjoyed this album. The instrumentals were extremely well done and fit together nicely. The album offers something for everyone; there are pieces that have a romantic feel, a couple that are upbeat, some opera style pieces, compositions you might hear in a coffee shop, and one with a European flair. jb_pr A wide variety of instruments are also represented, adding to the blended yet unified feel of the album.

There were several tracks I thoroughly enjoyed, and two that just weren’t for me. I loved:

  • 1. I found this track to be calming and peaceful.
  • 2. Well, because I adore Sting, this one was a no brainer.
  • 5. This is such a fun track. It’s got an upbeat Spanish tempo. It sounds playful and seems to tell a story.
  • 11. While listening to this track, I feel like I’m walking down a small cobblestone street somewhere in Italy.

And to be fair, these are the two tracks that were well done but just weren’t my style:

  • 6. While this is well done, I prefer the original … it’s just how I am (more here).
  • 12. I like Regina Spektor and expected to like this track. I’m not sure of exactly just what it was, but something didn’t work for me.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed the album. Joshua Bell is amazing … but from his amazing biography, we should know that. If you’re looking for a dinner party, background music type album, I highly recommend Joshua Bell’s At Home With Friends.

Album Review: Harry Connick, Jr., Your Songs

I’ll be honest – I usually do not like song remakes. I’ve found that unless the remake version is dynamite, my loyalty remains with the original.

Harry Connick Jr - Your Songs Naturally, there are exceptions to every rule, and this is one of them. Thanks to the One2One Network, I was given the opportunity to review Harry Connick Jr’s new album, Your Songs.

Before I give you more of my taste of the album, here are the songs it features, followed by the name of the original performer:

  1. All The Way (Frank Sinatra)
  2. Just The Way You Are (Billy Joel)
  3. Can’t Help Falling In Love With You (Elvis Presley)
  4. And I Love Her (The Beatles)
  5. (They Long To Be) Close To You (The Carpenters)
  6. Besame Mucho
  7. The Way You Look Tonight
  8. First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (Roberta Flack)
  9. Your Song (Elton John)
  10. Some Enchanted Evening
  11. And I Love You So (Don McLean)
  12. Who Can I Turn To? (Tony Bennett)
  13. Smile (Charlie Chaplin)
  14. Mona Lisa (Nat King Cole)

I love music, and was honored to have the opportunity to review Your Songs. Much to my surprise, I truly enjoyed the album. Don’t get me wrong – I have always enjoyed Harry’s music, and have a couple of Harry Connick Jr.’s other albums as well as several songs downloaded from iTunes. But as I mentioned above, I typically have a strong dislike for remakes of songs, and particularly classics, as many on the album are. Often, that strong dislike overpowers the artist’s talent and his/her individual take on the song. Not this time, however. The rich instrumentals paired with Harry’s timeless voice won me over. The album is classy. It’s dynamic and dramatic. It’s bold. It’s warm and inviting.

I could imagine this album playing in the background at a dinner party with my closest friends. I see myself listening to this album when I need some inspiration. HCJ_05_028 The album is great, in my mind, on rainy weekend mornings with a big cup of coffee and a good book. And the romantic theme is charming yet sophisticated – in a way only Harry Connick, Jr. can accomplish.

Specifically, I really enjoyed All The Way and Just The Way You Are. Harry has a way with music, and in these songs, I feel he’s most in his artistic element and most in touch with the specific song. Two that I just could not detach from their original makes were Can’t Help Falling In Love With You and Your Song. While I feel they are well done, I found myself thinking of the original artist instead and just couldn’t get into them.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the album. It had a feel that was typical of Harry Connick Jr.’s work, and that’s certainly a very good characteristic to have. In my mind, he’s fantastic, and his unique voice and ability to evoke a mood is incredible. If you enjoy Harry’s other albums, I’d highly recommend Your Songs. And if you’re looking for some relaxing and romantic mood music, this album is also for you. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Want more? The album is being released on Tuesday, 9/22; what are you waiting for … get out there and get your copy! Additionally, here’s a behind the scenes look at the making of the album, as well as Harry’s Facebook fan page. He’ll also be appearing on several upcoming television programs, including:

  • 9/25 – Oprah “Live Friday”
  • 9/28 – Today Show
  • 9/29 – The View
  • 9/30 – Imus in the Morning
  • 9/30 – Letterman

can you read this …

… without tears?

Maybe I’m just too emotional right now. Who knows. But seriously – I tried listening to it this morning and couldn’t even make it a minute in before I cried and had to turn it off. It WAS Monday morning, the most difficult morning for me to leave my Peanut, but seriously. I made myself listen to the whole thing this afternoon, and of course, I cried again!

From Big Daddy Weave (Track #: 9; Album: What Life Would Be Like; Lyrics By: Mike Weaver, Mark Schultz), here’s “From Here:”

My child, I’ve hoped and I’ve prayed for this very day
Since you were just a little one
And oh how my heart swells with pride
As I watch the man that you’ve become
But this life offers no guarantees
And though my time on this earth had to end
I’m sure that your heart would know peace
If you could just see where I am

From here, the race has been run and love’s already won
I see clearly the end and the start
From here, I’m cheering you on
So live out each breath with all that you’ve got
And know until I hold you close
I’ll be holding you dear in my heart
From here

I’ve seen your tears as you’ve waited alone
Longing for that special one
And now all the waiting is done
As you gaze into her eyes
Seeing the reflection of love
Life’s road may seem rough up ahead
And for now you see only in part
So hold onto each other and know
That there is an end to the dark

Heaven is calling and my heart keeps longing
Looking so forward to the day
When we’ll be together forever in eternity
Just you wait and see

Did you make it? Come on, be honest!

The song is awesome. In fact, the whole album is amazing. I’ve only listened to it in its entirety twice so far, so it’s not reviewable at this point. So far, though, I’ve loved every minute of it!

bits ‘n pieces

Well, it’s been a crazy few weeks in the “B” household. We’ve had some huge projects to finish before girlfriend’s arrival, and thanks to some great help from my dad and Justin’s mom, we’re rolling right through things! New windows have been installed, doors are hung, and there’s “Caribbean Sunset” paint on the walls! The floors are even started!

Our “how to hatch” classes are still happening; one tonight, and our last class next Monday. I think they’ll prove to be useful, but I’m convinced that you’ve got to have an open mind! It’s hysterical to be taking this class next to my “partner,” or husband, as I prefer to call him. Some of the stuff he comes up with is so funny! Plenty of things I didn’t know and hadn’t thought of, and lots of good tips for a gal who’s 95% sure she’ll be having an “accouchement naturel” for this journey.

My next appointment is this Wednesday – yippee! As far as I’m concerned, all is still well. I’ve really been blessed (Well, after the first 3 to 4 months of 24/7 nausea and vomiting …) — no crazy weight gain, swelling, stretch marks, heartburn, digestive “issues” (Sorry, TMI.) or other curses that plague many women. Let me rephrase and say none of these have happened YET; anything’s possible, and there are still 7 1/2 weeks left! Sleepless nights are all I’ve been dealt thus far, and I’m just treating those as though they’re only the beginning of the next 18 years of my life!

This past Friday, I got a huge surprise — well, almost. A few things at work seemed “off,” but nothing that really got me thinking until I walked in the kitchen just after lunch. (How they made it until 15 minutes before without me knowing is still amazing to me. I’m never surprised, and they pulled it off!) One of my two cravings during this pregnancy has been oranges, so I went to the kitchen to peel one for an early afternoon snack. As I walked in, three of my co-workers were busy heating huge bowls of chocolate. Upon questioning, they swore the chocolate was for strawberries at their desk. Uh huh, yeah right. After a series of other suspicious acts, I was certain — it was the afternoon of my baby shower. It turned out to be an amazing afternoon; I can’t thank those that planned it enough — I had a great time! I am also so grateful for the gifts we received; people are so sweet! Girlfriend got lots of amazing gifts and plenty of necessities. Now we’re just waiting on her to get this party started! Many thanks to my co-workers; I’m still in awe, and everything is GREATLY appreciated!

I’m a music addict, and can’t help but give an extra listen to the following two songs lately. The first had me in tears every time I heard it; thankfully, I’ve gotten over it and can now listen to the song in its entirety without shedding a tear. The second just makes me reflect on just how amazing this miracle really is.

Darius Rucker – It Won’t Be Like This For Long

He didn’t have to wake up
He’d been up all night
Lying there in bed and listening
To his newborn baby cry
He makes a pot of coffee
He splashes water on his face
His wife gives him a kiss and says,
“It’s gonna be okay”

“It won’t be like this for long
One day we’ll look back laughing
At the week we brought her home
This phase is gonna fly by
So baby, just hold on
It won’t be like this for long”

Four years later, ’bout 4:30
She’s crawling in their bed
And when he drops her off at pre-school
She’s clinging to his leg
The teacher peels her off of him
He says, “What can I do?”
She says, “Now, don’t you worry
This’ll only last a week or two”

“It won’t be like this for long
One day soon you’ll drop her off
And she won’t even know you’re gone
This phase is gonna fly by
If you can just hold on
It won’t be like this for long”

Someday soon she’ll be a teenager
And at times, he’ll think she hates him
And he’ll walk her down the aisle
And raise her veil,
But right now she’s up and cryin’
And the truth is that he don’t mind
As he kisses her goodnight
And she says her prayers

He lays down there beside her
‘Till her eyes are finally closed
And just watching her it breaks his heart
‘Cause he already knows

It won’t be like this for long
One day soon that little girl is gonna be
All grown up and gone
And this phase is gonna fly by
So he’s trying to hold on
It won’t be like this for long
It won’t be like this for long

George Strait – I Saw God Today

I just walked down the street to the coffee shop
had to take a break
I’d been by her side for eighteen hours straight
I saw a flower growing in the middle of the sidewalk
pushing up through the concrete
like it was planted right there for me to see
the flashin’ lights, the honkin’ horns
all seemed to fade away
in the shadow of that hospital at 5:08
I saw God today

Chorus:
I’ve been to church
I’ve read the book
I know He’s here, but I don’t look
near as often as I should
Yeah, I know I should
His fingerprints are everywhere
I’d just slow down to stop and stare
opened my eyes and man I swear
I saw God today

I saw a couple walking by they were holding hands
Man, she had that glow
yeah I couldn’t help but notice she was starting to show
I stood there for a minute takin’ in the sky
lost in that sunset
a splash of amber melted in the shades of red

Chorus

I got my face pressed up against the nursery glass
She’s sleeping like a rock
My name on her wrist wearing tiny pink socks
She’s got my nose, she’s got her mama’s eyes
My brand new baby girl
She’s a miracle
I saw God today

This is a forward I received last week — SO funny!

The “Middle Wife” by an anonymous 2nd grade teacher

I’ve been teaching now for about fifteen years. I have two kids myself, but the best birth story I know is the one I saw in my own second grade classroom a few years back.

When I was a kid, I loved show-and-tell. So I always have a few sessions with my students. It helps them get over shyness and usually, show-and-tell is pretty tame. Kids bring in pet turtles, model airplanes, pictures of fish they catch, stuff like that. And I never, ever place any boundaries or limitations on them. If they want to lug it in to school and talk about it, they’re welcome.

Well, one day this little girl, Erica, a very bright, very outgoing kid, takes her turn and waddles up to the front of the class with a pillow stuffed under her sweater.

She holds up a snapshot of an infant. “This is Luke, my baby brother, and I’m going to tell you about his birthday.”

“First, Mom and Dad made him as a symbol of their love, and then Dad put a seed in my Mom’s stomach, and Luke grew in there. He ate for nine months through an umbrella cord.”

She’s standing there with her hands on the pillow, and I’m trying not to laugh and wishing I had my camcorder with me. The kids are watching her in amazement.

“Then, about two Saturdays ago, my Mom starts saying and going, ‘Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh!’ Erica puts a hand behind her back and groans. “She walked around the house for, like an hour, ‘Oh, oh, oh!’ (Now this kid is doing a hysterical duck walk and groaning.)

“My Dad called the middle wife. She delivers babies, but she doesn’t have a sign on the car like the Domino’s man. They got my Mom to lie down in bed like this.” (Then Erica lies down with her back against the wall.)

“And then, pop! My Mom had this bag of water she kept in there in case he got thirsty, and it just blew up and spilled all over the bed, like psshhheew!” (This kid has her legs spread with her little hands miming water flowing away. It was too much!)

“Then the middle wife starts saying ‘push, push,’ and ‘breathe, breathe.’ They started counting, but never even got past ten. Then, all of a sudden, out comes my brother. He was covered in yucky stuff that they all said it was from Mom’s play-center, (placenta) so there must be a lot of toys inside there.”

Then Erica stood up, took a big theatrical bow and returned to her seat. I’m sure I applauded the loudest. Ever since then, when it’s show-and-tell day, I bring my camcorder, just in case another “Middle Wife” comes along.

Random 1 …
I love the recently released Coldplay song, Viva La Vida.” I really don’t know why I love it so much. I’ve always liked Coldplay, and this time, I can’t get enough of this song. There’s something so “official” sounding about it. It’s serious, and makes me introspective. I like that. Sometimes.

Random 2 …
My friends, I have found my new snack of choice. On my way home from the “do it our way or hit the highway” institution, I stopped at Roots Market. Among other things, I bought a 1.5 lb. bag of Organic Raw Pepitas. While they’re awesome as they are, I wanted to roast them. Oh. My. Gosh. The taste and texture of those little roasted seeds are beyond words. I took a cup or so and coated them with a bit of olive oil and sea salt. They then went onto a foil-lined baking sheet and into the oven at 250 degrees for 15 minutes. What emerged was total bliss. My next trials will include garlic powder, ranch dressing mix, and parmesan cheese – one at a time, of course! I can’t wait!

Random 3 …
The house is so quiet. No husband, no dog-son. I’ve been alone before, and typically love my days alone, but for some reason, I feel lost this time. Thinking about it, I can’t remember a time when Justin went away with Cody. He’s always here with me, and it’s his absence that has me feeling lonely. He doesn’t talk, but provides a comforting presence. I know, I’m crazy.

Random 4 …
I heard someone else use the word berm besides my husband. Yippee! How exciting! Chef Duff (of Charm City Cakes) on Ace of Cakes used the word berm when discussing a dirt biking Bar Mitzvah cake. Justin, I take back all of my criticisms of your use of the word berm; I’m sorry! NOTE: The definition of berm will also appear in this week’s word of the week entry.

Random 5 …
He did it! Our four-legged friend made his way into the ocean for the first time! Justin said Cody’s chasing the birds – big surprise. He’s always looking for a playmate – whether it be squirrels, birds, or the neighbor’s cats! The report – he’s going in up to his “elbows,” and that’s about it. Hey, he’s no retriever or spaniel, people … he’s a husky (And a wimpy one, at that!)!

Another short list with a hidden theme – surprised? Enya is music therapy for me, relieving any stress I could have. Both Beth Orton and Heather Nova take me back to college days, and Walking on Sunshine makes me dance every time! Finally, Rusted Root rounds out the list, because no playlist is complete without them! If there’s anything on this list that’s new to you, try it! Oh, and let me know how it goes!

Enjoy!

It’s that time again. A short list, but still a list. I’ve searched the vault high and low and come up with this eclectic mix.

As always, it’s laced with a few of my favorites. Funky Days are Back Again always makes me want to dance. Now that I think about it, it’s probably best suited for dancing in the car. And yes, I do that. Last of Days is light, best categorized in my own twisted day as having a late spring/early summer feel. Larry Placek and the Tune Masters bring us Love Me Forever, which immediately makes me think of my well-rooted and quite wacky in-laws. I can picture my husband and both of his parents singing this goofy tune. Beth Orton is a classic, and she has a good showing in my library. Her voice and music feel like autumn. With that, I’ll tell you that the playlist is all about … well, why don’t I let you figure it out for yourself! :)

Enjoy!

We’re back for round two, and this time, there’s another hidden theme. A few artists in this mix are near the top of my favorites list – Toby Lightman has an organic sound to her music that I can’t resist, and The Animals Were Gone is among my favorites by Damien Rice. Cruel Sun is a Rusted Root classic, and Take Five: Classic Jazz is great Saturday morning coffee music! Oh, and if you haven’t heard the new Counting Crows album, Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings, it’s great! A bit “noisier” than their previous albums, which is a good thing. Still, though, with that classic Counting Crows signature sound. And while Catie Curtis usually requires me to be in an introspective mood, her music reflects life, telling stories that range from detailed accounts of hard times to some of life’s little successes. She’s amazing!

Enjoy!

For those of you who are unaware, I’m a music fanatic. While there are times that I do thoroughly enjoy silence, most of my day is filled with a constant flow of music. A day at work without my iPod is depressing and leaves a bit to be desired in the productivity department. Silly, I know, but so terribly true.

My iPod is at present filled with 4,846 songs, and could quickly grow if I wanted to spend the time to transfer the rest of my CDs over. Someday. Until then, I’ll rely on what’s available through iTunes. Stretched out side-by-side, my iTunes wishlist could probably wrap around the world a few times.

Now, for some about today’s playlist. Bob Marley is one of the best for putting me in a good mood; as soon as I hear his voice, I’m back in Grand Cayman, diving and having fun! “C’mon N’ Ride It” is for my nephews, the biggest choo choo fanatics I’ve ever seen! For the smoothest angry song out there, there’s “Indigo Flow.” Plus, it references the Deftones, and who can’t love a song that does that!? Anymore, I’ve got to listen to music from Grey’s Anatomy since I can’t see the show, so there’s “Moon and Sun” by Gomez. And for those sleepless nights, the renowned Ludwig Van Beethoven offers his compositions, sure to soothe even the most restless sleeper. Finally, to make the list feel just right, there are some of my favorites mixed in: Matt Perrone, Toby Lightman and Enya.

Enjoy! Oh, and see if you can figure out the theme of this playlist!
